Frustrated Parental Rant

For the past week, I've been trying to get Grace an appointment with a pediatric behavioral specialist. You would think that somewhere in CT, there would be someone who could help us. I've called several different doctors who are supposed to be specialists and could diagnose (if appropriate) Asperger's Syndrome in Grace. They're either not taking new patients, or the waiting list means I can't get her an appointment until 2008. Yup, you read that right... February 2008 is the closest appointment so far.

Today one of my SIL gave me a number for an organization called "Help Me Grow." I guess they're affiliated in some way with the Birth To Three program. They're going to help me find an advocate, so that Grace's school is aware that I know what I'm talking about when it comes to the legal stuff that they're obligated to provide for her. They're also going to try to help me find specialists that can take her and evaluate her within the next few months instead of having to wait until next year.

Grace is lucky to have such a loving mother to go through such extent to get her the best care! I'm glad you've been pointed in a direction to get the school to recognize their obligations.

Grace is so lucky to have such a great mom. I can't believe that the Dr's don't have openings until Feb 2008! That is terrible. Hopefully, you can find a decent advocate who will be willing to help you and Grace out. You've obviously done a lot of research and are well aware of what the school is obligated and not obligated to provide for her. All children shoudl be so lucky to have parents that are so involved and knowledgable. Way to go! Huge Kudos to you and your family!
